Adoption Basics
Dealing with an unplanned pregnancy isn’t easy, and it is entirely normal to feel conflicted regarding your options. Part of you may feel as if you are ready to be a mother, and another part may have doubts. For this reason, exploring all your options is important. Adoption is one of the options women have when they are dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. Before you decide for or against it, you need to learn more about the adoption process. The adoption process unites a child born to one mother and father into the arms of another family. The parents who adopt the child become legally responsible for that child and therefore raise that child as their own. During the adoption process that child becomes a legal member of their new family, and thus that child’s adoptive parents are now 100% responsible for the decisions and direction of that child’s life. It is these finalities that make it difficult for a woman to decide whether or not she she should place her child up for adoption.
Part of learning more about adoption information is learning more about the various types of adoption available. Not every adoption process involves you cutting all of your ties with your baby. Many types of adoption allow the birth mother to remain in contact with the adoptive parents and sometimes even her baby. Before you choose adoption you need to consider what type of adoption would work best for you. Then, you can find compatible adoptive parents for your baby.
When gathering adoption information, it is important to learn more about the three most common types of adoption. The three most common types of adoption are open, semi-open and closed. If you choose an open adoption you will create and agreement between you and the adoptive parents you choose to have some level of contact. That contact is decided upon before the adoption process is finalized. Contact may include pictures, e-mails, phone calls, letters and in some cases even visits. It is important to protect your rights by ensuring your state enforces such agreements.
The other two types of adoption are exactly as they sound. Semi-open involves you meeting with the adoptive parents before the adoption process is complete. However, once the process is finalized no further contact between you and the adoptive parents is allowed. If agreed upon pictures and updates would be exchanged through a third party. A closed adoption involves no exchange of identifying information between either parties before or after the process takes place. Families are chosen through profiles and once the process is complete no contact occurs because the adoption is considered confidential.
Choosing to place your child up for adoption is a huge decision. There is a lot that goes into the adoption process. For this reason, it is important for you to prepare and educate yourself so that you understand your rights and have control of your situation. It is best to find a reliable third party source to help you navigate the process successfully and provide you emotional support from start to finish.
