For parents considering placing their child with an adoptive family, the hospital visit can be a bitter-sweet experience. While you love your child, you may be placing your child because you want a better life for him or her than you could provide. And for some, gult accompanies these difficult decisions. But you should ever feel guilty for giving your child the best life possible--whatever that may be. All in all, placing a child is a hard experience to go through.

And because the hospital stay will be different than those who will not be placing their child, there are a few things you should keep in mind-some things you should think about and consider before you are admitted for your labor and delivery.

Keep in mind that you don't need to have all the odds and ends pinned down by the time you get to the hospital. If you have questions and concerns, or are considering placing your child, talk with the hospital staff. They can help you speak to the right people for your specific situation. They can answer your questions and let you know about your options. Because, you do have options. Some of the following pages will help you know how to talk and what to say to the hospital staff if you are exploring adoption.

If you decide that placing your child with another family is the right decision, naming your baby can be a little complicated. This all depends on how far along in the adoption process you find yourself. For some, you can pair up with the adoptive parents and come to an agreement about the child's name. Or, if they prefer to name the child, you can always name him or her for yourself. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. That way, you can save your memories of your child, and attach those memories to the perfect name.

While being at the hospital can be overwhelming--especially for those exploring and considering adoption, the hospital staff is there to help you. Remember that. Be open and honest with them and they can provide you with the information you need to make an informed decision.
